Youth Protection TrainingIn the Boy Scouts of America, adult training starts with Youth Protection. Youth Protection Training (YPT) is required for all registered adult volunteers. It is highly recommended that all parents and adults involved with Scouting take the training so everyone understands the policies and avoids confusion. You do not need to be a registered adult volunteer to take the training.

Taking YPT Online

Anyone can take YPT with an Internet-connected computer. The training takes 30 minutes or less to complete following these steps:

  1. Go to my.scouting.org.
  2. Sign in if you already have an account, or create an account if you don't already have one.
  3. Click the "Menu" button at the top-left corner of the window.
  4. Choose the “My Dashboard” button from the drop down list.
  5. Make sure "My Training" is selected in the menu/button just below "My Dashboard".
  6. Click the "YPT" tab just below the "my.Scouting" title.
  7. Click the "Take Course" or "Retake Course" link as desired.

Take YPT In-Person

Units can also provide YPT to their adults by using the instructor-led model. This process does require some resources and preparation.

  1. Contact your District Training Chair (TBD) or your Unit Training Chair to schedule your training. The trainer needs to be a registered adult BSA member who has already taken YPT and is familiar with the training content and process.
  2. Make sure to use the current version of the "Youth Protection Training for Volunteer Leaders and Parents" DVD (item No. 610327 or 36121). The video is also available via this YouTube link.
  3. Download the YPT facilitator's guide.
  4. Print enough end-of-course quizzes and completion certificates from the facilitator's guide for each training participant.
  5. Administer the training.
  6. Issue training completion certificates to each participant upon successful completion.
  7. Submit a formal training attendance report and end-of-course quizzes to the Council Registrar (membership@seattlebsa.org) and District Executive (chornor@seattlebsa.org) so proper credit can be recorded in the profiles of each participant.

 In the Chief Seattle Council and Alpine District, adult volunteers must complete YPT on an annual basis to be rechartered with the district and/or Unit (Pack, Troop, Team, Crew, Post). Your completion date has to be after the end of the year previous calendar year at the time of recharter. If an adult volunteer's YPT record is not current at the time of recharter, the volunteer will not be re-registered, and a new application and YPT certificate will need to be completed and submitted.
