Nuclear science gives us a simple explanation of the natural world. The ultimate goal of nuclear science is to find out if there is one fundamental rule that explains how matter and forces interact. Earning the Nuclear Science merit badge is a chance for Scouts to learn about this exciting field at the cutting edge of science today. Note: There is a $5.00 fee for this workshop.

Prior to the workshop, please complete the following at home…

– Complete the worksheet that will be emailed and bring with you.

– Requirement 4c – Obtain a sample of irradiated and non-irradiated foods. Prepare the two foods and compare their taste and texture. Store the leftovers in separate containers and under the same conditions. For a period of 14 days, observe their rate of decomposition or spoilage, and describe the differences you see on days 5, 10, and 14.

A good option is to compare prepared (washed and sliced) organic fruit and non-organically grown fruit (e.g., strawberries): organic fruit is never irradiated.

This workshop will give scouts a chance to complete the remaining requirements of this merit badge.

Scouts should bring personal snacks, water bottle, pencil, notebook, blue card signed by scoutmaster, prework worksheet, and the results of requirement 4c.
